X aims to launch new AI features, payment options & ads this year as it develops into a platform beyond social media.
Elon Musk's social media platform X has started rolling out its audio and video calling feature to Android users, continuing its efforts to become an 'everything app'.
One of the engineers at X announced on Friday that the ability to make direct audio and video calls from within the app is now available to Android clients after an app update. The feature had previously launched for iOS users in October.

Any user can receive calls through the app. However, only paid subscribers will be able to place calls, continuing X's strategy of restricting certain features to paying users. Subscriptions start at $8 monthly for X Premium and $16 monthly for Premium Plus.
Users control who can call them, allowing calls from contacts, people they follow, or all verified profiles. Settings also allow disabling calls entirely.
The interface unveiled by X designer Andrea Conway includes a speaker, mic mute, video toggle and end call buttons. This follows CEO Linda Yaccarino's vision of "unlimited interactivity" within the app through features like calls, messaging and future plans like payments.
While the addition could raise spam concerns, users can prevent unwanted calls through privacy settings. X aims to launch new AI features, payment options and ads this year as it develops into a multifaceted platform beyond social media.
