McLaren's constructors' championship celebrations remain on hold following a disappointing weekend.

Max Verstappen secured a commanding victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, capitalising on Oscar Piastri's early retirement to deliver another statement performance for Red Bull. Verstappen controlled proceedings right from lights to flag, managing his hard tyres expertly during an extended opening stint before switching to mediums. The Dutchman's measured approach allowed him to claim his fourth victory of the season whilst also securing the fastest lap bonus point.

The championship battle took an unexpected turn when points leader Piastri crashed out on the opening lap after a disastrous start to his weekend. The Australian had already struggled in qualifying and compounded his troubles by jumping the start, forcing him to take up position at the back of the grid.

Piastri's race ended just five corners into the grand prix when he attempted an overly ambitious overtaking move on Esteban Ocon's Haas around the outside. With insufficient grip, the McLaren slid straight into the barriers, marking his first major error of the campaign.

Despite his teammate's misfortune, Lando Norris failed to maximise the opportunity. Starting seventh, the Briton could only manage to finish in the same position, closing the championship gap to just 25 points rather than the potential windfall that Piastri's retirement offered.

George Russell delivered an exceptional drive to claim second place for Mercedes, overcoming illness that had affected him throughout the weekend. Carlos Sainz provided the day's most emotional moment by securing third place for Williams, marking the team's first podium since Belgium 2021. The Spaniard held his nerve under pressure to convert his strong qualifying performance into a memorable result for his new team.

The result continues Red Bull's recent upturn in form following upgrades introduced at the previous round in Italy. Verstappen now sits 69 points behind Piastri with seven races remaining, keeping his slim title hopes mathematically alive. McLaren's constructors' championship celebrations remain on hold following a disappointing weekend. The championship fight remains alive heading into the next round, though Piastri retains a substantial advantage. McLaren will be hoping their star can bounce back from his Baku struggles, whilst Verstappen's recent form suggests Red Bull may yet have a say in this year's title race.
