Max Verstappen, the Red Bull star, won his 42nd Formula One race in a dominating performance at the Red Bull Ring during the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. His impressive showing was particularly striking ahead of the resurgent Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. The Monegasque driver finished second, while the Spaniard came fourth after losing ground thanks to a track limits penalty that allowed Sergio Perez to get close enough to launch an attack. The second Red Bull driver recovered well after a poor qualifying performance.

In a race rife with track limits penalties, Lando Norris managed to haul a highly updated McLaren to fifth in a superb drive that earned him Driver of the Day. He was followed by Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin, in what was an otherwise quiet weekend for the rising team. Lewis Hamilton limped the Mercedes to seventh, tailed by his teammate George Russell. Pierre Gasly took ninth for Alpine, with Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10 in the second Aston Martin.

Alexander Albon was unfortunate to miss out on points in another striking performance from the Williams driver. He finished 11th ahead of Esteban Ocon in the second Alpine. Albon’s teammate Logan Sargeant managed 13th. Guanyu Zhou took 14th for Alfa Romeo, ahead again of Valtteri Bottas, who could only manage 16th.

Nyck De Vries achieved 15th for AlphaTauri in another middling race, though he did outpace his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who finished 18th. Oscar Piastri has seemingly yet to get to grips with the upgraded McLaren, finishing well behind Norris in 17th.

Haas struggled in Austria, with tyre degradation proving highly problematic. Kevin Magnussen took 19th, but Nico Hulkenberg retired from the race, triggering a virtual safety car that briefly allowed the Ferrari duo to overhaul Verstappen. Despite this, the Dutchman overtook Leclerc and built such a massive gap that he could pit for fresh rubber on the penultimate lap to record the fastest lap of the race.
