The 3-time world champion is on route to his 57th race win and record 10th consecutive one.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull have once again demonstrated their dominance in the 2023 Formula 1 season by securing pole position for the Australian Grand Prix. Despite challenging practice sessions, the Dutch driver managed to outpace Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr., who made an impressive return following an appendectomy that forced him to miss the previous race.
The Ferrari SF24 showcased its competitiveness during the practice sessions at Albert Park, displaying strong long-run pace that overshadowed the Red Bull. However, Sainz's teammate, Charles Leclerc, was unable to capitalise on the car's performance due to a mistake in the final corner of his Q3 lap, resulting in a fifth-place start.
Sergio Perez secured third place in the other Red Bull, while Lando Norris impressed in the McLaren, claiming fourth. The Australian crowd had reason to cheer as hometown hero Oscar Piastri qualified sixth in the second McLaren.

Yuki Tsunoda delivered a standout performance in the Visa Cash App RB, securing eighth place. Mercedes' George Russell managed seventh, but his teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, struggled and will start from 11th on the grid.
The Aston Martin duo of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso completed the top 10, with Stroll edging out the two-time world champion. Alexander Albon qualified 12th in the sole Williams after the team decided to race only one car following his crash in FP2.
Valtteri Bottas secured 13th place for Stake Sauber, while his teammate Guanyu Zhou struggled, qualifying last on the grid in 19th. The Haas team saw Kevin Magnussen qualify 14th and Nico Hulkenberg 16th, while the Alpine cars continued to underperform, with Esteban Ocon in 15th and Pierre Gasly in 17th.
Daniel Ricciardo's return to F1 has been challenging, as he once again failed to match the pace of his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, particularly disappointing at his home Grand Prix. Logan Sargeant did not qualify, as Williams opted to give their only available car to Albon, despite the latter being responsible for the crash that limited their options.
As the teams prepare for the race, all eyes will be on Max Verstappen and Red Bull as they look to extend their lead in the championship. However, with the impressive performances from Ferrari, McLaren, and other midfield teams, the Australian Grand Prix promises to be an exciting and closely-fought contest.
