FASTag Annual Pass Can Now Be Gifted: NHAI’s Diwali Idea for Frequent Travellers

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new way to gift a FASTag Annual Pass to someone else, just in time for last-minute Diwali shoppers. The government’s Rajmargyatra app now allows people to type in someone else’s vehicle details and contact information when purchasing the annual pass, in order to apply it to the recipient’s FASTag account. Payment can be made via UPI, credit/debit card, or online banking. After an OTP and vehicle eligibility verification process, the pass will be activated for them within two hours. 

Aside from gifting, this could be a useful tool for families who share a vehicle. The FASTag annual pass was introduced on August 15 this year, after earlier proposals to do so were approved. Priced at ₹3,000, it offers quick access through approximately 1,150 National Highways Authority of India toll collection points up to 200 times, or for one calendar year, whichever comes first. It is applicable only to privately owned vehicles. 

The annual pass can be purchased through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI’s website. Users do not have to worry about constantly refilling their FASTag wallet balance, and frequent travelers can save a significant amount of money, as toll payments work out to just ₹15 per crossing if all 200 trips are used within a year. 

The MoRTH announced last week that over 25 lakh users had purchased FASTag annual passes, racking up 5.67 crore transactions in the two months since it was launched. The pass can be activated on any existing FASTag account. Toll will still be deducted at non-eligible collection points, such as on expressways, state highways, and parking facilities. 

After 200 trips are exhausted or the year is completed, standard toll amounts will be deducted from the wallet balance for each crossing. Annual passes are not transferable to other FASTag accounts once activated.
