Ferrari has announced that the name of its latest car will be the SF-23 which will be driven by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. Last year, the name of the car was the F1-75 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Ferrari brand in GP racing after Enzo Ferrari fired up the 125 S. In 2020, the name of the car was the SF-1000 as in the year Ferrari celebrated its 1000 F1 GP start. In 2021, the car’s name was SF-21 which is in line with the naming convention the Scuderia has followed since a while. The SF-23 will be revealed to the world on Valentines day, February 14.
Many expect the brand new car to be showcased unlike what Red Bull did with the launch of the RB19 which was basically a livery launch with the old RB18 from last year. Ferrari is expected to launch a car which will be similar in design externally but will have an overhauled aerodynamic concept which addresses some of the weaknesses of its predecessor in terms of race pace, tyre degradation and drag.
Ferrari is also expected to unlock more horsepower on its turbo hybrid engine despite the engine development freeze. Ferrari has said it will be introducing reliability centric updates which should make its power unit more reliable. This would mean an additional 30 bhp which Ferrari had to ramp down after it had a few engine failures that impacted Leclerc's bid to mount a championship challenge against the Red Bull of Verstappen. In fact, this additional power will also help Ferrari in peak straight-line speed which it lacked while duelling with the Red Bull in race trim as on average it had the fastest car in qualifying.
