Farley has developed a profound appreciation for EVs, explaining the reasons behind his shift in perspective.
Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley recently shared an inspiring opinion piece on social media, detailing his newfound enthusiasm for electric vehicles (EVs). As a self-professed "lifelong petrolhead," Farley has found his passion in leading one of the world's most prominent automakers. His forward-thinking approach to the future of electrification showcases why he's at the helm of Ford, backed by compelling data.
Farley's career has been deeply rooted in the automotive industry, having spent significant time at Toyota and Lexus before joining Ford in 2007. Over his tenure, he ascended through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as CEO in 2020. Even before Farley's leadership, the industry was already transitioning towards electric vehicles, known for their power, quiet operation, and significantly reduced emissions.
In his recent post, Farley reflects on his love for traditional combustion engines, stating, “The rumble of a V-8 feels like the soundtrack of my life,” and sharing that he still spends weekends working on his 1973 Ford Bronco. Despite this enduring passion, Farley has developed a profound appreciation for EVs, explaining the reasons behind his shift in perspective. He effectively debunks common misconceptions about EVs and provides insightful predictions for the industry's future.
Farley's LinkedIn post is a recommended read, offering a well-articulated, relatable, and informative perspective from the CEO of a major automaker. He presents strong arguments that resonate with EV advocates, beginning with his journey towards embracing electric vehicles.
As a lifelong car guy, I was surprised when I fell in love with electric vehicles. It wasn't because of politics. People are choosing electric vehicles because they remove daily hassles and remind us why we love to drive. I wrote about this today on LinkedIn. In my 40 years… pic.twitter.com/y4tNngakS1

Farley then tackles prevalent misconceptions about EVs, comparing their evolution to significant technological advancements such as mobile phones, computers, and the internet, which were once dismissed as fads.
A crucial point Farley addresses is the misconception about EV range. According to Ford's research, approximately 50 per cent of Americans travel over 241 km only four times a year or less. He highlights that 80 per cent of EV owners charge their vehicles at home, noting that public charging networks in North America are expanding. Farley recounts a cross-country trip in an F-150 Lightning, acknowledging challenges with finding reliable chargers but remains optimistic about improvements in charging infrastructure.
Farley also notes that nearly 70 per cent of global EV owners intend to stick with electric vehicles in the future. With the US imposing higher tariffs on Chinese-made EVs and other regions like Europe and Canada potentially following suit, Farley emphasizes the importance of supporting American automakers. He reassures that Ford, with its 121-year legacy, is well-equipped to navigate this transition.
