In a big boost to India's local manufacturing plans, Foxconn, the biggest contract manufacturer of Apple iPhones has acquired manufacturing equipment valued at $31.8 million (Rs 267 crore) for its Tamil Nadu facility, says a report by news agency PTI. The investment marks a significant milestone as India becomes the first country outside China to produce the premium iPhone Pro models.
The procurement details emerged through a regulatory filing by Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited, confirming the purchase of machinery from Apple Operations Limited.

This strategic investment by Foxconn underscores Apple's growing commitment to diversifying its manufacturing base outside of China.
According to the PTI report, in a filing, Foxconn said: “Subsidiary Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited announces obtaining of machinery equipment” with a total transaction amount of “$31,804,528.45” from” APPLE OPERATIONS LIMITED”.
The equipment will specifically support the production of the iPhone 16 Pro series at Foxconn's Tamil Nadu plant. The facility is expected to begin shipping these high-end devices by late October or early November, following Apple's recent announcement about launching its first India-manufactured Pro series.
The production of Apple devices in India is done through several key partnerships. Apple works with Taiwanese contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Pegatron in the region. Additionally, the Cupertino-based tech giant has established a significant relationship with India's Tata Group, which acquired Wistron's operations and stands as the only India-based manufacturer in Apple's supply chain.
