eCrate is available in three configurations and is a plug-and-play system.

GKN Automotive, a United Kingdom-based drivetrain manufacturer, revealed a new concept it calls eCrate. This plug-and-play system is said to be designed to meet growing demand from small electric vehicle manufacturers for modular electric drive technology.

The eCrate system has been designed as a cost-effective modular electric drive system with the aim of optimising efficiency and performance. GKN Automotive says this system can be bought and used in an off-the-shelf format.

Dirk Kesselgruber, Chief Technology Officer at GKN Automotive, said, “Based closely on our existing technology, our new eCrate concept will bring this technology to even more customers looking for high-quality and cost-effective electric drive units in a plug-and-play format.”

The eCrate comes in three configurations – a 152 bhp 2-in-1 system (motor and transmission), a 152 bhp 3-in-1 system (motor, transmission and inverter) and a 248 bhp 3-in-1 system. GKN Automotive says these systems will be available to purchase as early as 2025. These systems have been targeted towards low-volume manufacturers as well as those retrofitting electric drivetrains in older vehicles. Furthermore, the manufacturer claims the eCrate system can be used in multiple types of vehicles including small to large cars as well as light commercial vehicles that are in series production.
