Google has begun rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to select Android Auto users, replacing Google Assistant with a more conversational, context-aware experience, and introducing new features like real-time message translation.
Google has started rolling out its new Gemini AI assistant to select Android Auto users, marking a big shift from the legacy Google Assistant to a more advanced, conversational artificial intelligence model.
This update, which was promised by CEO Sundar Pichai earlier this year, is currently being made available to beta testers running Android Auto versions 15.6 and 15.7 through a server-side update.
Early reports from users and industry sources indicate that Gemini is appearing in vehicles paired with compatible devices, such as the Pixel 10 Pro XL. The rollout is still in its testing phase, and it remains unclear whether it is limited to beta users or if a broader release is imminent.
Gemini is designed to offer a more natural and context-aware experience compared to Google Assistant. It supports smoother voice commands, improved app integration, and features like real-time translation of text messages while driving.
Users can activate Gemini using the familiar “Hey Google” prompt, and a new “Live” mode can be accessed with the command “let’s talk live,” which introduces an interactive interface on the dashboard.
Within the Android Auto system settings, users will now find a dedicated “Gemini” section, where they can manage new options such as “Interrupt Live Responses” and “Share Precise Location,” both enabled by default.
Despite these updates, some users have noted minor limitations, such as Gemini’s current inability to recognise contact nicknames like “mom” or “boss,” a feature previously supported by Google Assistant.
As Gemini continues to expand, it is expected to eventually replace Google Assistant in more environments.
