In an unexpected move, Google has addressed widespread criticism by introducing the 256GB variant of the Pixel 8 Pro in India, priced at Rs 1,13,999 ($1,518). However, the variant is available exclusively in Obsidian Black, with no Bay Blue option. It should be noted that at the India launch briefing for the Pixel 8 Pro, Google's executives did say that were open to reviewing their decision to not launch the 256GB variant of the phone if the demand was there and clearly they have had to make a u-turn.
The launch follows recent visits by Google executives, including Rick Osterloh, to the Google for India conference. There, they declared that from 2024 onwards, all Pixel smartphones, starting with the Pixel 8 series, would be manufactured in India.
Unveiled in early October, the Pixel 8 series is equipped with Google's latest Tensor G3 chipset and boasts AI features enabling users to edit photos extensively. These include removing unwanted objects and selecting optimal expressions in group shots. Additionally, an audio enhancement feature eliminates ambient noise. Further updates may allow users to utilise Google's cloud to improve video quality.
Despite generally positive reviews, the series has faced scrutiny over its performance and longevity, particularly in light of Google's ambitious claim of offering 7 years of software updates. Critics argue that not only does the Pixel 8 series lack the necessary power to last this duration, but also that most users do not retain their phones for such a long period.
The pricing strategy in India has also sparked controversy. IDC analyst Navekendra Singh tweeted, "They are not serious about India. They have no clue about how this market works." Earlier he had criticised the prices noting that Apple dominates the premium market. Singh did acknowledge that local manufacturing, set to commence next year, could positively impact pricing.
