The AI assistant lets drivers locate destinations, verify electric vehicle charging station availability and on Android devices, share estimated arrival times with contacts.

Google Maps is aiming to change navigation with an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) upgrade, introducing Gemini-powered features that transform the driving experience into a hands-free, conversational journey. The mapping service is launching its first voice-activated, conversational driving capability, powered by Gemini and Google's extensive real-world data.

The technology functions similarly to having an informed companion providing guidance throughout your journey. The AI assistant lets drivers locate destinations, verify electric vehicle charging station availability and on Android devices, share estimated arrival times with contacts -- all through simple voice commands requiring no manual interaction.

"We’re bringing Gemini, your AI assistant, to our hands-free driving experience in the Google Maps app. That means it’s even simpler to find places along your route, check for available EV chargers or on Android, share your ETA with friends. No fumbling required — now you can just ask," Amanda Leicht Moore, Director of Product, Google Maps, wrote in a blog post.

Multi-Step Task Management Via Voice Commands

Users can now handle complex queries such as: "Is there a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route, something within a couple miles? ... What's parking like there?" Followed by, "OK, let's go there."

The system extends beyond navigation, allowing users to request: "Oh, by the way, can you also add a calendar event for soccer practice tomorrow for 5 p.m.?" With user authorisation, Gemini integrates with Calendar applications to create events automatically.

Drivers can enquire about specific details including "What dishes are popular there?" or receive updates on sporting events and current affairs whilst maintaining full attention on driving.

New Traffic Disruption Reporting System

Recognising the importance of driver contributions to reliable navigation, Google has streamlined the process for reporting road incidents. Users can simply state "I see an accident," "Looks like there's flooding ahead" or "Watch out for that slowdown" to instantly report disruptions.

The Gemini-powered navigation features will begin rolling out in coming weeks on Android and iOS platforms wherever Gemini is accessible, with Android Auto support following shortly.

Landmark-Based Direction Guidance

Addressing the common confusion around distance-based instructions, Google Maps now supplements traditional directions with visible reference points. Beyond traffic signals and stop signs, the system identifies prominent landmarks including petrol stations, restaurants and notable buildings along routes.

Drivers receive intuitive instructions such as "turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant," with the landmark highlighted on the map as they approach.

This functionality analyses Google Maps' current information covering 250 million locations, cross-referencing Street View imagery to select the most recognisable landmarks visible from roadways, ensuring precise and practical guidance.

Landmark-based navigation is currently rolling out on Android and iOS devices throughout the US.

Google Maps now provides advance warning of road disruptions even when navigation isn't actively running. The system sends proactive notifications about unexpected road closures or severe traffic congestion ahead.

These proactive traffic alerts are now available on Android devices across the United States.

Following arrival at destinations, Gemini continues assisting with exploration. Users can discover highly-rated menu items at restaurants or confirm specific products at nearby shops through quick conversations with Google Maps.

By tapping the camera icon in the search bar and pointing the device at surroundings, users can identify restaurants, cafés, shops or famous landmarks. After viewing location pins, users can tap the microphone to ask questions such as: "What is this place and why is it popular?" or "What's the vibe inside?"

Lens functionality built with Gemini begins gradual rollout later this month across Android and iOS devices in the US.
