L2-5 Category Opens Door for Innovative Mobility Solutions.
The Indian government is proposing a new category of vehicles: convertible two and three-wheelers. This move comes in response to the emergence of innovative vehicles like the Hero MotoCorp-owned Surge S32, which doesn't fit neatly into any existing classification.

This new category, designated as L2-5, would encompass three-wheeled vehicles that can be transformed into regular scooters and vice versa. This unique design allows owners to switch functionalities based on their needs. For example, the same vehicle could be used as a rickshaw for passenger transport, a small cargo carrier for deliveries, or a personal scooter for individual travel.

The L2-5 vehicle itself consists of two parts: a regular two-wheeled scooter and a separate, non-motorised rear module. When needed, the scooter can be slotted into the module, essentially becoming the front wheel of the three-wheeler configuration. Detaching the scooter allows it to function independently as a regular two-wheeler.

The introduction of L2-5 vehicles could hold potential benefits for both individual users and urban mobility as a whole. Firstly, these vehicles offer increased flexibility to users, allowing them to adapt the vehicle to their specific needs, whether for transporting passengers, delivering goods, or simply getting around town. Secondly, the unique design of these vehicles could potentially contribute to improved urban mobility by offering efficient solutions for last-mile delivery services and ride-sharing options in crowded cities.

It's important to note that this is currently a proposed amendment, and the final implementation of the L2-5 category will depend on further approvals and the establishment of specific regulations. However, this move signifies the government's willingness to consider innovative vehicle designs that have the potential to address the evolving needs of the transportation sector.
