The newly introduced annual pass will be priced at ₹3,000 and become operational from August 15, 2025.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Wednesday announced an annual toll payment system, in a bid to transform highway travel for private vehicle owners across India. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the launch of FASTag-based yearly pass during a public address, says a report by Times of India.
The newly introduced annual pass will be priced at ₹3,000 and become operational from August 15, 2025. This comprehensive payment solution targets private non-commercial vehicles, including cars, jeeps, and vans. The pass remains active for a whole year from activation or covers 200 highway trips, whichever limit is hit earlier.
Vehicle owners would access pass activation and renewal services through the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, along with official websites operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This digital-first approach aims to streamline the entire process for users nationwide.
The announcement will tackle persistent issues surrounding toll collection infrastructure, particularly concerning toll plazas located within 60-kilometre distances. By consolidating multiple toll payments into a single annual transaction, the system promises to reduce administrative complexity and user costs.
The annual pass framework is engineered to deliver multiple benefits for private vehicle operators. Primary advantages include reduced waiting periods at toll booths, decreased traffic bottlenecks on major highways, and minimised disputes at collection points.
Under the existing structure, frequent users of specific toll plazas can secure monthly passes for ₹340 by providing address verification and supporting documentation. These monthly arrangements total ₹4,080 annually, making the new annual pass a more economical alternative.
Financial data from 2023-24 reveals that India's total toll revenue reached ₹55,000 crore, with private cars contributing ₹8,000 crore to this figure. Transaction analysis demonstrates that while private vehicles represent 53 per cent of total highway passages, they generate merely 21 per cent of overall toll revenue.
Traffic pattern studies indicate private vehicles comprise approximately 60 per cent of highway usage during peak hours (6 AM to 10 PM), while commercial vehicles maintain consistent movement throughout day and night cycles.
