Retro-roadster motorcycles have always held a special place in Indian households. Their easy non-committed ergonomics combined with a calmer engine, and ‘classic’ styling wreak of culture in ways that transcend time.

However, of late, a lot of manufacturers have come up with their interpretation of this segment, and the Hero Mavrick 440 is the most recent example. Based on the same platform that also underpins the Harley-Davidson X440, the new Mavrick 440 looks like a sporty cruiser with a nice premium appeal.

And when it comes to appeal, the Triumph Speed 400 is a game changer. Sticking out for its exceptional build quality and tidy engineering, this Indo-Brit looks and is conveniently impressive. So, how do the two motorcycles compare against each other, and which one should you opt for?

Both Hero Mavrick 440 and Triumph Speed 400 are tuned to be effortless city commuters. But the British bike is the more performance-oriented of the two. Now we are yet to ride the Mavrick 440, it is the same engine also found in the Harley-Davidson X440, which is relaxed and quick. But the Mavrick produces peak power and torque almost 2000-2500 rpm less than the Speed 400, so top-end performance will be better served in the latter.

The comfortable suspension tune of the Speed 400 is regarded as one of the best in the segment. The Hero Mavrick 440 gets a more conventional telescopic fork and dual-shock absorber combo. The bigger brake setup might help the Hero Maverick’s case with better-stopping power, but the Triumph Speed 400 is not that bad either. Aside from both ride on the same 17-/17-inch front and rear wheel combo.

The Hero Mavrick 440 is larger, wider, and taller than the Triumph Speed 400. Which in turn should make the latter more agile and nimble to handle. The build quality of the Speed 400 is also worth mentioning here. Its shorter seat height does slightly eat into its ground clearance, at 176 kg (wet) it is 15 kg lighter than the base-spec variant Mavrick 440.

Variants And Price

Just like the Harley-Davidson X440, the Hero Mavrick 440 is also available in three variants that are distinguished by its wheels. The base-spec model with spoke wheels is priced at ₹1.99 lakh. Followed by the mid-spec variant with alloy wheels at ₹2.14 lakh, and the top-spec variant with diamond-cut alloy wheels is priced at ₹2.24 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). The Triumph Speed 400’s premium looks are reflected in its price tag and at ₹2.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), it is ₹9000 pricier than the most expensive Hero Mavrick 440 variant.

Conclusion

The Speed 400 at ₹2.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) enhances the whole ownership experience with its exceptonal build quality which is a proper Triumph standard. With three variants and a wider price range (₹1.99 lakh to ₹2.24 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi), the Maverick 440 gives you the benefit of choice. And while both of them are nearly priced on par, we expect you to have distinctly different feels and thus, a particular liking for one more over the other. If you want something that is going to be a bit more energetic and peppy to ride in the city and not too much of a hassle on the weekends, the Triumph would be a good bet. The Hero might just be a relaxed motorcycle, one that you don’t have to stress about too much while riding in any scenario.
