Hindalco will set up a new manufacturing facility in Odisha which will be commissioned by 2025.
Hindalco Industries, a subsidiary of Aditya Birla group, has announced that it will invest ₹800 crore to build a new plant in Odisha to expand its aluminium foil manufacturing for lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells. The new manufacturing facility, to be commissioned by 2025, will initially produce 25,000 tonnes of aluminium foil.
Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco, said “We are seeing a fast traction in battery materials demand, driven by an impressive outlook for the Electric Vehicle and Grid Storage sectors. Raw material localisation is critical in such strategic sectors.”
Hindalco says the new manufacturing facility in Odisha will augment the aluminium foil supply from its facility in Mouda, Maharashtra to Gigafactories worldwide. The factory in Sambalpur, Odisha will be located around a 25 MW solar power unit and can also draw power from a 400 KV national grid connection.
By 2030, demand for battery-grade aluminium foil in India will grow to 40,000 tonnes, which Hindalco says will be primarily driven by mushrooming growth in Gigafactories for cell manufacturing. The brand also says its new facility has been set up to serve the rapidly growing market for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems.
Hindalco’s Mouda facility has achieved a breakthrough in manufacturing battery foils and it is in the process of qualifying with lithium-ion cell manufacturers in India, Europe and the USA. The company says it is closely working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to co-develop and produce critical components like battery enclosures, motor housings, busbars, structural and safety components.
