Hindalco Industries announced today that it has delivered 10,000 aluminium casings to Mahindra for its BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs. These casings are used to store the battery and 3,000 Mahindra SUVs on-road are already fitted with these casings.
One of the biggest advantages of using aluminium casings is its lightweight nature. Hindalco claims that these casings are 40 per cent lighter than conventional steel casings. This in turn improves the vehicle’s range by 8-10 per cent. Plus, the casings also have improved thermal cooling capacity, and have been duly crash tested to adhere to safety standards.

On the sidelines, Hindalco also announced the inauguration of its dedicated EV component manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, where these casings will be made. The facility is built over 5 acres within an industrial park with a capital investment of ₹500 crore. Currently, the facility reserves the capacity to produce 80,000 enclosures annually, and later on it plans to scale it up to 1,60,000 units annually. The Chakan facility is also expected to generate up to 1,000 jobs, and all the machines inside the plant are operated by women – which Hindalco claims is a rarity in the industry.
