The Honda Sahara 300 is the replacement of the hugely popular XRE 300.
Honda has quietly expanded its adventure motorcycle offerings in Brazil with the launch of the Sahara 300. This new motorcycle replaces the XRE 300 and caters to the growing demand for smaller, more affordable adventure bikes.
The new Honda bike revives the Sahara nameplate used by Honda in the past. Unlike its predecessor, the XRE 300, the new Sahara adopts a more budget-conscious approach. It features a simpler, air-cooled single-cylinder engine compared to the XRE's DOHC setup. This 293cc engine focuses on affordability and fuel efficiency, with E100 (Ethanol 100%) compatibility. This also offers slightly more power on ethanol at 25.2 bhp compared to 24.8 bhp on petrol.
Tipping the scale at a manageable 149 kg (kerb weight), the Sahara 300 is manoeuvrable and easy to handle. However, this benefit comes with a slightly intimidating seat height of 859 mm. This tall stance is a result of the bike's long-travel suspension, offering 245 mm travel at the front and 225 mm at the rear for tackling rough terrain with confidence. To further enhance its off-road capability, the Honda Sahara 300 utilises a classic 21-inch front wheel paired with an 18-inch rear wheel combination for optimal handling on uneven surfaces.
The Sahara 300 comes in three variants – Standard, Rally, and Adventure. While specific details on the variant differences haven't been revealed, all models are expected to prioritise functionality over high-end features. Standard features likely include a modern instrument cluster, t type-C USB charger for on-the-go device charging, and dual-channel ABS for improved braking performance. Additionally, preload-adjustable suspension should offer a comfortable ride on a variety of terrains.
When it comes to ADV offerings for the Indian market, Honda has the premium segment covered with motorcycles such as the Honda Africa Twin, XL750 Trans Alp and the NX500. But the Japanese giant has no presence in the affordable barring for the CB200X, which is more of a namesake ADV offering. We feel the Honda Sahara 300 makes perfect sense for the Indian market. The engine has simple construction, it has the right hardware and the bike looks purposeful as well. The only negative in our opinion is the tall seat height and whether or not Honda India can deliver the bike at a competitive price or not. Given the action in the ADV space, we really hope the Honda Sahara 300 hit Indian roads and trails soon!
