Hyundai, in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has issued a recall affecting over 145,000 electric vehicles (EVs). The recall addresses a defect in the integrated charging control unit (ICCU), a critical component responsible for maintaining the 12-volt battery's charge. The malfunction could cause the battery to drain unexpectedly, resulting in a potential loss of power while driving and increasing the risk of accidents. On a separate note, Hyundai India recalled 1,744 units of the Ioniq 5 in June this year regarding the same issue.

The recall includes five different EV models under Hyundai and Genesis nameplates, spanning multiple model years. The NHTSA provided the following list of affected vehicles:
Make | Model | Model Years Affected |
---|---|---|
Genesis | GV60 | 2023-2025 |
Genesis | GV70 | 2023-2025 |
Genesis | G80 | 2023-2024 |
Hyundai | Ioniq 5 | 2023-2024 |
Hyundai | Ioniq 6 | 2023-2025 |
The ICCU defect appears to be a manufacturing or design flaw that damages the unit over time, potentially leading to a failure in charging the 12-volt battery. This failure can leave drivers stranded or create hazardous conditions by causing a sudden loss of power while the vehicle is in motion.
Hyundai has previously addressed similar issues in its electric models. In May 2023, the company recalled nearly 100,000 EVs, including the same models, for an identical problem. The expanded recall suggests the scope of the defect is more extensive than initially estimated.
Hyundai has announced a comprehensive plan to resolve the issue. Dealerships will inspect the ICCU and its associated fuse and replace any components that have failed. Additionally, the control unit's software will be updated as a preventive measure. All repairs will be provided free of charge to customers. Hyundai has committed to notifying affected vehicle owners by mail starting in mid-January 2024.
