The investment will establish India's first smartphone display module manufacturing facility catering to Apple's production needs.

Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday approved a whopping Rs 13,180 crore ($1.6 billion) investment from iPhone maker Foxconn's subsidiary Yuzhan Technology (India), says a report by Economic Times

Display Modules For Apple To Be Made At The Facility

The company, which is a unit of Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, aims to generate 14,000 new jobs, marking a significant expansion in the manufacturing sector in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The investment, approved during Chief Minister MK Stalin's first cabinet meeting with newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, will establish India's first smartphone display module manufacturing facility catering to Apple's production needs.

Sources familiar with the project were quoted by the ET report as saying that Yuzhan Technology has secured approximately 500,000 square feet of space at the ESR Oragadam Industrial & Logistics Park. The location, adjacent to Foxconn's existing smartphone assembly unit near Chennai, is expected to streamline operations.

Pegatron And Tata Electronics May Be Able To Source Components Locally

Industry insiders indicate that the facility could adopt an innovative business model allowing other contract manufacturers, such as Pegatron or Tata Electronics, to source components locally instead of relying on Chinese imports.

The Foxconn project headlined a larger investment package approved by the cabinet, which included 13 other projects totaling Rs 38,698.80 crore. According to State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, these combined investments are projected to create 46,931 jobs across various sectors.

"The investments would be made in production of PCB, low tension panels, mobile phone components and cases, manufacture of luxury cars and their spares, high end equipments and their software, defence equipment, medical equipment, non-leather footwear, production of renewable energy, including green hydrogen and green ammonia, e-vehicles and telecommunication related R&D," Thennarasu was quoted as saying.
