Czech automaker Skoda has unveiled the Epiq show car at IAA Mobility 2025, previewing what promises to be the brand's most affordable all-electric SUV when it enters production in 2026. Positioned as an entry-level offering in Skoda's expanding electric portfolio, the compact crossover aims to make electric mobility accessible to everyday drivers while maintaining the brand's hallmark design philosophy and practical features.

Exterior Design: Modern Solid Language Takes Center Stage

The Epiq represents a significant design evolution for Skoda, becoming the first model to fully embrace the brand's new "Modern Solid" design language. This philosophy combines robustness, functionality, and authenticity through bold, minimalist styling that sets it apart from conventional compact SUVs.

The exterior showcases a striking Cashmere matt paintwork complemented by a glossy black Tech-Deck Face, creating a sophisticated two-tone appearance. The front fascia features distinctive T-shaped LED daytime running lights and turn indicators that frame the vehicle's face, while the main headlights sit lower to accentuate a robust front bumper finished in Cosmo grey. A new tornado line visually separates the body sections, creating strong shoulders and distinguishing the glass cabin from the rest of the vehicle for a dynamic, contemporary appearance.

At 4.1 metres in length, the Epiq maintains compact dimensions ideal for city navigation while projecting an SUV-like stance through squared-off wheel arches and functional design elements. The rear design continues the sporty theme with an extended roof spoiler and matching T-shaped LED signature, reinforcing the vehicle's modern aesthetic.

Interior Design: Practicality Meets Digital Innovation

Inside, Skoda has prioritised everyday usability through a minimalist approach that reflects the brand's "Mobile First" philosophy. The cabin features a floating centre console with open storage compartments and wireless smartphone charging capabilities. A new two-spoke steering wheel incorporates both physical buttons and haptic scroll wheels, ensuring essential functions remain easily accessible while driving.

The dashboard is dominated by a large central touchscreen for infotainment and vehicle settings, maintaining Skoda's commitment to digital integration without overwhelming the driver. The interior incorporates recycled materials to emphasize the vehicle's electric nature while maintaining comfort and durability.

True to Skoda's "Simply Clever" heritage, the Epiq offers generous storage solutions including bag hooks, cargo elements, fastening hooks, and hidden underfloor compartments. With seating for five passengers and an impressive 475-litre boot capacity, the Epiq maximizes space efficiency within its compact footprint.

Battery and Range: Competitive Electric Performance

The Epiq is expected to offer multiple battery configurations to suit different driving needs and budgets. Reports suggest two main options: a smaller 38kWh battery pack for city-focused driving and a larger 56kWh unit for extended range capabilities.

Skoda claims the Epiq will deliver up to 425 kilometres of range on a single charge, positioning it competitively within the compact electric SUV segment. The larger battery variant is expected to support rapid DC charging at speeds up to 125kW, enabling 10-80% charging in approximately 20 minutes.

Significantly, the Epiq will feature LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery technology, which uses cheaper raw materials than traditional NMC batteries, helping to reduce overall vehicle costs. This technology choice represents Skoda's strategy to achieve greater cost efficiency in electric vehicle production while maintaining performance standards.

Pricing Expectations: Democratizing Electric Mobility

The production version of the Epiq is expected to carry a starting price comparable to its petrol sibling, the Kamiq, in many markets. European pricing is anticipated around €25,000 (approximately ₹22-23 lakh), positioning it as Skoda's most affordable electric vehicle.

This pricing strategy represents a significant step toward making electric mobility accessible to mainstream buyers, with Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer emphasizing the importance of offering "electric cars at an attractive price point". The competitive pricing is made possible through the use of more cost-effective LFP battery technology and production efficiencies within the Volkswagen Group's shared platform strategy.

European Competition: Crowded Compact EV Segment

In Europe, the Epiq will face intense competition from an array of established and emerging electric crossovers. Key rivals include the Renault Scenic E-Tech, Peugeot e-3008, and Ford Explorer Electric among traditional European manufacturers. The growing threat from Chinese brands adds another competitive layer, with models like the BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, and Geely's Zeekr offerings providing alternatives with competitive pricing and advanced technology.

The Epiq will also compete directly with its Volkswagen Group siblings, including the upcoming Volkswagen ID.Polo and Cupra Raval, all built on the same MEB Entry platform. This shared architecture allows for cost efficiencies while enabling each brand to differentiate through design and feature positioning.

Premium compact EVs like the Mini Aceman and Volvo EX30 represent the upper end of the segment, while more affordable options such as the Citroën e-C3 and Renault 4 target budget-conscious buyers. The Epiq's positioning between these extremes could prove strategic in capturing a broad customer base.

India Launch Feasibility: Opportunities and Challenges

The Epiq's prospects for an Indian launch appear promising given several favorable factors. Under Volkswagen's PEAK EV project, the group plans to localize the MEB platform for the Indian market, specifically targeting entry-level and mid-size electric SUVs. This localization could significantly reduce costs and improve the Epiq's competitive positioning.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has indicated plans to introduce at least five EV models from its global portfolio, with the Epiq specifically mentioned as a potential candidate. The compact SUV's 425km range and practical dimensions align well with Indian urban mobility needs, while its European heritage could appeal to premium-conscious buyers.

However, several challenges could impact the launch timeline and success. The lack of widespread charging infrastructure remains a concern for electric vehicle adoption in India. Additionally, the Epiq's expected pricing would place it above mass-market electric SUVs, potentially limiting its appeal in a price-sensitive market.

The success of Skoda's current India strategy, including the localization of the MQB A0 platform and the potential launch of the petrol Kamiq, could serve as a template for the Epiq's eventual introduction. If the Epiq does reach India, it would likely arrive in 2026 or later, following the global production launch.

The Epiq represents Skoda's ambitious vision for affordable electric mobility, combining practical design, competitive technology, and strategic pricing to challenge established players across multiple markets. Its success will largely depend on execution of the production version and the brand's ability to deliver on its cost and performance promises while maintaining Skoda's reputation for quality and innovation.
