Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID.Cross Concept at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, previewing a compact electric SUV set to launch in summer 2026 with an expected price range of €28,000-30,000 (₹25-27 lakh approximately). This electric replacement for the T-Cross aims to bring affordable electric mobility to Europe while potentially expanding Volkswagen's EV footprint to emerging markets like India.
Design and Specifications
The ID.Cross Concept showcases Volkswagen's new "Pure Positive" design language, measuring 4,161mm in length with a 2,601mm wheelbase, making it similar in size to the current T-Cross. Built on the upgraded MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive, the electric SUV features a 155kW (211PS) electric motor and promises up to 420 kilometres of WLTP range.
Key specifications include a spacious 450-liter boot capacity plus a 25-liter frunk, five-seat configuration, and impressive towing capability of 1,200kg. The concept features premium interior materials, dual display setup with 11-inch digital instruments and 13-inch central touchscreen, and advanced driver assistance systems previously seen only in higher segments.

Pricing and Market Position
European pricing is expected between €28,000-30,000 ($32,780-35,121), positioning it strategically above the ID.Polo hatchback which starts at €25,000. This pricing targets budget-conscious consumers seeking electric mobility without compromising on features or space.
The ID.Cross will compete in Europe against established rivals including the Kia EV2 and EV3, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Peugeot E-2008, Opel Mokka Electric, Jeep Avenger, and Volvo EX30. Production will begin at Volkswagen's Pamplona facility in Spain alongside the ICE-powered T-Cross.
India Launch Speculation
While Volkswagen hasn't officially confirmed India launch plans for the ID.Cross, several factors suggest potential market entry. Volkswagen has signed agreements with Mahindra to supply MEB platform components for Indian electric vehicles, indicating the German automaker's renewed interest in the Indian EV market.

If launched in India, the ID.Cross would likely be priced between ₹20-25 lakh, competing directly with upcoming models like the Kia Syros EV (expected at ₹14-18 lakh), Hyundai Inster EV (₹12-15 lakh estimated), and premium variants of established players.
Competitive Landscape in India
India's compact electric SUV segment is witnessing significant activity with multiple launches planned for 2026. Current market leaders include the Tata Nexon EV (₹12.49-17.19 lakh) and Mahindra XUV400 EV (₹15.49-17.69 lakh). The Nexon EV offers up to 489km range with a 45kWh battery, while the XUV400 provides 456km range with its 39.4kWh battery pack.
Upcoming competitors include the Tata Punch EV facelift expected in October 2025 with enhanced 45kWh battery, Mahindra XUV3XO EV launching in August-September 2025, and multiple Korean offerings from Hyundai and Kia. The Kia Syros EV, positioned as a direct Nexon EV rival, is expected to feature similar battery technology as the Hyundai Inster EV with 42kWh and 49kWh options.
Market Outlook
India's electric vehicle market is projected to grow at 28.52% CAGR, reaching $18.32 billion by 2029 from $5.22 billion in 2024. The government's target of 30% EV adoption by 2030 and recent policy support through the PM E-DRIVE scheme allocation of ₹2,000 crore for charging infrastructure creates a favourable environment for international EV manufacturers.
The compact SUV segment dominates Indian consumer preferences, making it an attractive entry point for Volkswagen's electric ambitions. However, price sensitivity remains crucial, with most successful EVs in India priced below ₹20 lakh.
Volkswagen's potential India entry with the ID.Cross would depend on successful localization to achieve competitive pricing, leveraging either the MEB platform partnership with Mahindra or adopting the cost-effective CMP platform for local assembly. The 2026 launch timeline aligns with India's evolving EV infrastructure and increasing consumer acceptance of electric mobility.
