The iPhone is made in India at Pegatron, Foxconn and Tata facilities
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has shipped $14 billion worth of iPhones from assembly lines in India during the 2024 fiscal year, indicating an aggressive ramp-up of production in the country. The report suggests that India now accounts for 14% of all iPhone production globally.
Foxconn, one of Apple's primary assembly partners, was responsible for 67% of the units produced in India, while Pegatron, which is in advanced discussions to hand over its India plant to Tata Electronics, assembled around 17% of the units. The remaining units were produced by Tata Electronics, which leveraged its acquisition of the former Wistron facility.
Apple's efforts to diversify its supply chain beyond China have been driven by geopolitical tensions between the West and China, as well as China's strained relationships with its neighbours, including India. While China remains the primary hub for iPhone manufacturing worldwide, India has managed to secure a significant share of the production, and Apple plans to continue expanding its manufacturing partnerships in the country.
Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, India's largest conglomerate, is not only in advanced talks with Pegatron to take over its facility but is also developing another plant in Hosur, India. Additionally, Tata Electronics is set to absorb a new expansion that Pegatron is building on top of its existing plant.
The year 2023 marked a significant milestone for Apple in India, as it was the first time the company shipped its latest iPhone models, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, from the country simultaneously with the US launch. This development highlights Apple's growing commitment to establishing India as a key manufacturing hub for its products.
As Apple continues to strengthen its presence in India and diversify its supply chain, the country is poised to play an increasingly important role in the global production of iPhones and other Apple devices.
