Within the PC category, notebooks led the way with 13.1% annual growth, while desktop shipments rose 19.3%.
The traditional PC market in India, which includes desktops, notebooks and workstations, saw shipments grow 14% year-over-year to reach 4.5 million units in the third quarter of 2023, according to data from research firm IDC.
Within the PC category, notebooks led the way with 13.1% annual growth, while desktop shipments rose 19.3%. Consumer demand drove much of the increase, with the consumer segment growing 26.3% compared to flat growth in the commercial segment.
A portion of a large education project in the state of Gujarat propelled education PC shipments higher, with that segment soaring 117.5% compared to the same period last year. The etailer channel, comprising online-focused retailers, rebounded with 26.4% growth after four consecutive quarters of declines as sellers prepared for major festival season promotions.
Market leader HP Inc. shipped devices totalling 29.4% of India's overall PC market in Q3. The company saw strong growth of 33.5% in the commercial segment thanks to gains in education and government tenders. HP also had its best-ever consumer quarter boosted by positive consumer spending trends and inventory build-up.
Lenovo came in second place with a 17% share, though its shipments declined 8.8% for the quarter. While its commercial business declined marginally, Lenovo came third in the consumer segment behind Asus. Lenovo fared better in desktops, where shipments grew 32.5% year-over-year.
Dell Technologies rounded out the top three with a 14.6% share, growing faster than the market at 3.8%. It held the number two spot commercially but came fourth in consumer behind Lenovo, with a strong 68.5% consumer growth. Dell chose not to overstock, which led to some share loss but helped maintain healthy channel inventory levels.
Asus surpassed Acer to capture the number four spot in India PCs with a 12.5% share. Asus reported its best-ever consumer quarter, shipping over 500,000 units, as it stocked up to avoid supply issues from new import regulations. Commercial shipments jumped 69.9%, while the consumer shipments grew 42.9%.
Acer held the fifth position just behind Asus with an 11.6% share despite a solid 20.9% annual increase. While its commercial segment declined 6.7%, strong consumer demand propelled 75.7% growth in the segment and Acer's best consumer quarter to date.
