The government is mulling to implement stricter controls on laptops, tablets and personal computers imports starting 2025, pushing global manufacturers to boost local production in the world's fifth-largest economy, says a report by news agency Reuters.
According to sources quoted by the Reuters report, the proposed restrictions will affect laptops, tablets, and personal computers, transforming India's $8-10 billion IT hardware sector. The move to curb import comes after the country's temporary import monitoring system, introduced in November 2023, expires.

The upcoming policy could significantly impact major players like Apple, Dell, and HP as they currently rely heavily on importing their devices into the Indian market.
The current system requires tech giants to register their import volumes and values with authorities. This replaced an earlier controversial licensing proposal that was withdrawn following pressure from international businesses and U.S. diplomatic intervention.
Government officials believe manufacturers have received sufficient time to adjust their operations and establish local production facilities. This proposed initiative aligns with India's broader push towards local manufacturing, marking a shift from the country's traditional dependence on tech imports.
