Polaris had taken ownership of the iconic American bike brand in 2011

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, has officially entered a new chapter as Carolwood LP completed its acquisition of the historic brand from Polaris. The deal marks Indian Motorcycle’s transition into a fully independent company focused exclusively on motorcycles, setting the stage for a major transformation as the brand celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2026.

With this acquisition, Indian Motorcycle will now operate as a stand-alone business under the leadership of new CEO Mike Kennedy, a veteran of the motorcycle industry. The timing of the acquisition is significant, as 2026 marks 125 years of Indian Motorcycle’s heritage. Kennedy described the moment as both an honour and an opportunity to shape the future of one of the most iconic names in motorcycling. He emphasised that while the brand will celebrate its storied past, the primary focus will be on driving innovation, improving craftsmanship, and strengthening the connection between Indian Motorcycle and its global riding community.

The company aims to sharpen product performance, elevate design and craftsmanship, and deliver a more distinct brand experience. In fact, last month the legendary bike manufacturer also introduced the new Indian Chief Vintage.  As part of the finalised acquisition, nearly 900 employees have transitioned into the newly formed Indian Motorcycle Company. Manufacturing will continue at the company’s established facilities in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Monticello, Minnesota. Meanwhile, product development, design, and technology operations will remain active at research centers in Burgdorf, Switzerland, and Wyoming, Minnesota.
