Following a significant tech event last month, Intel has now launched its latest batch of computer chips for desktops. Rather than using an entirely new design, these chips are upgraded versions of existing ones. The lineup includes models with names like Core i9-14900K and Core i7-14700K.
So, what's changed? Essentially, these new chips are souped-up versions of their predecessors, boasting some extra features to make your computer run more smoothly. Notably, the i7 model has seen a few tweaks to enhance its efficiency.
The swiftest chip in this new range can achieve speeds of up to 6GHz. While a model from the previous generation also hit this milestone, it was not as widely available. The current offering aims for broader market appeal.
Among the key changes, the Core i7-14700K stands out. It now utilises a different mix of 'cores'—think of them as the chip's workforce—to boost efficiency and speed. Some cores are specialists, and some are generalists, making the chip faster and better at temporarily storing data for quick access.
Intel has also rolled out some software upgrades. One such feature promises to make certain computer games run up to 16% faster. However, it's worth noting that not all games will benefit from this enhancement.
For those keen on squeezing out every last drop of performance from their computers, there are also new artificial intelligence features. These help the computer to run even faster and support quicker memory, ensuring that data can be read and written more rapidly.
On the connectivity front, these chips offer improved support for WiFi and Bluetooth technologies. They're also compatible with Thunderbolt 5, which allows for rapid data transfer between your computer and other devices.
Finally, these new chips are compatible with newer types of motherboards—the primary circuit boards in computers—but they'll also work with some older versions.
These chips are available for purchase as of today.
