Apple's iPhone 15 is now finding itself on the back foot, eclipsed by a resurgent Huawei.
Once the undisputed leader in the Chinese smartphone arena, Apple's iPhone 15 is now finding itself on the back foot, eclipsed by a resurgent Huawei. Until the previous financial quarter, the iPhone had maintained its position as the best-selling smartphone in China. However, new data indicates that even domestic brands like Xiaomi and Honor have overtaken Apple in market share, raising serious questions for the Silicon Valley giant.
Huawei, which had been severely hampered by stringent US trade sanctions, has executed a remarkable turnaround. A significant catalyst for this recovery has been China’s own Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC). The development of a potent new chipset by SMIC has paved the way for Huawei's launch of the Mate 60, a highly competitive smartphone that is challenging established brands.
Financial experts at Jefferies have been tracking these shifts assiduously. "The waning appetite for the iPhone 15 in China will likely result in reduced global shipments for the device in 2023," they caution. Further, they speculate that the current trend may well set Apple on a course to cede even more ground to Huawei in the forthcoming year.
Discounts on the iPhone 15 models in Chinese retail outlets signal flagging demand for Apple’s flagship device. This is in stark contrast to its robust performance in other markets such as the United States and India, where the smartphone continues to generate strong consumer interest.
Huawei's rise, fall, and resurgence have been nothing short of dramatic. The company had briefly ascended to the rank of the world's largest smartphone seller in 2020. However, that success was truncated when the US imposed trade sanctions, which prevented Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) from supplying Huawei with cutting-edge 5G chipsets. This led to a significant retrenchment in Huawei’s smartphone business and forced it to sell off its Honor subsidiary.
In a turn of events, SMIC has now reportedly bypassed US trade sanctions, creating a processor for Huawei that lags only two generations behind Apple's current chipset but offers functionalities that even surpass it.
This unforeseen development has shaken the industry, more so as it coincided with Apple's own unveiling of the iPhone 15. The situation has not only unsettled the global smartphone marketplace but has also sparked fresh concerns in the United States, calling into question the shifting balance of technological innovation between the East and the West.
