JSW Motors seems ready to bring in three badge-engineered Chinese SUVs from their Chery partnership, rather than just a single model.

JSW Motors has been generating quite a lot of attention recently as it prepares to enter India’s passenger vehicle market. Following its strategic partnership with SAIC’s MG Motor, the JSW Group is now planning an independent automotive venture under the JSW Motors brand.

The company had previously hinted at multiple models in development for the Indian market. Early teasers suggested products resembling the Chery iCar V23 and the Jetour T2, with the latter being patented in India recently.

Adding to the speculation, the Jaecoo J5 has now been spotted testing in Pune. The test vehicle was reportedly undergoing evaluation at the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which often indicates potential launch preparations.

The Jaecoo brand is owned by China-based Chery Automobile and operates alongside other Chery sub-brands such as Jetour and iCar. If introduced in India, the Jaecoo J5 could be part of the upcoming portfolio JSW Motors is planning for the domestic market.

The Jaecoo J5 falls into the C-segment SUV category. It measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. One notable feature is the use of independent rear suspension, which is relatively uncommon in India’s C- and D-segment SUVs and may contribute to improved ride comfort.

Design highlights include flush door handles, LED lighting elements and wheels up to 19 inches in size. The SUV is also expected to offer a wide range of features such as a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, 540-degree camera system, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and a driver monitoring system.

Inside the cabin, the vehicle is likely to feature a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 14.8-inch portrait-oriented infotainment display. Other equipment may include powered seats, ventilated and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and an eight-speaker Sony sound system.

Globally, the Jaecoo J5 is available with both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The hybrid variant uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 1.83 kWh battery, producing a combined output of 221 bhp and 295 Nm of torque. The electric version features a 58.9 kWh battery pack and a single front-mounted motor producing 211 bhp and 288 Nm of torque.

If JSW Motors proceeds with the model, it remains to be seen what changes the company will make to the India-spec version.
