The Government of India is already exploring options of increasing the ethanol blend to 30 percent in the next five years, and progressing toward even higher blends.
The ongoing Japan Mobility Show 2025 has been a host to some very interesting vehicles, one of them is the Suzuki Fronx. Now, it’s not just any ordinary Fronx but the one featuring a flex-fuel setup. And with alternate fuels, particularly ethanol-blended petrol, being the talk of town in recent years, a flex-fuel Maruti Fronx is a strong possibility for the Indian market.
The Fronx Flex Fuel Vehicle (FFV) showcased in Tokyo is a concept car that is capable of running on fuel blends containing up to 85 percent ethanol. Look-wise, the Fronx FFV is identical to the petrol-powered Fronx on sale in India barring some bold graphics with a green decal and Flex Fuel branding on the sides.
The main highlight of the Fronx FFV lies under its hood featuring the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine but this one has been tweaked to accommodate petrol up to 85 percent ethanol blends. There’s no mention of the exact specs like output and mileage, which we expect to receive once the car reaches the production stage.
As of now, Fronx is available in two petrol engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit and a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged unit. A 5-speed manual gearbox is common to both while the naturally aspirated unit gets the option of a 5-speed AMT and the turbo petrol comes with an optional 5-speed torque converter automatic. Besides petrol, Maruti also offers the Fronx with a factory-fitted CNG kit that is available with the 1.2-litre mill exclusively mated to the 5-speed manual gearbox.
| Engine | 1.2-litre NA petrol | 1-litre turbo-petrol | 1.2-litre NA petrol + CNG |
| Power | 89 bhp | 99 bhp | 76.5 bhp |
| Torque | 113 Nm | 148 Nm | 98.5 Nm |
| Transmissions | 5-speed MT/5-speed AMT | 5-speed MT/6-speed AT | 5-speed MT |
| Fuel efficiency (claimed) | 21.79kmpl (MT) / 22.89kmpl (AMT) | 21.5kmpl (MT) / 20.1kmpl (AT) | 28.51km/kg

The interior cabin layout of the Fronx FFV seems to be identical to the current model. However, the Japan-spec Fronx comes with a few additional nips and tucks such as heated front seats, electronic parking brake with auto hold and level-2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). We expected the flex fuel Fronx to launch in India sometime in the near future, probably in 2026.
