The Jeep Wrangler was first unveiled 37 years ago at the 1986 Chicago Auto Show.

Jeep has announced the sale of 5 million units of the iconic Wrangler across the globe. The 5th millionth unit was a 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe 20th anniversary edition, which was bought by a customer in New Jersey, U.S. The Wrangler was first unveiled at the 1986 Chicago Auto Show, replacing the Jeep CJ and continuing the legacy established by the original 1941 Willys MB.

Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America, commented, “With five million Wranglers sold, the Jeep brand continues to grow fueled by the unwavering passion of the Jeep global community. With legendary 4x4 capability, open-air-freedom and a timeless design, the Wrangler embodies the spirit and the soul of the Jeep brand.”

“Over 80 percent of the five million Wranglers sold since 1986 are still on the road, having fun out there and showcasing the amazing staying power of the vehicle. Our new 2024 Wrangler raises the bar once again as the most capable Wrangler yet, with more technology, safety features and refinement,” he added.

In India, the Jeep Wrangler is sold in two different variants - Unlimited and Rubicon. While the Wrangler Unlimited is priced at Rs 60.65 lakh (ex-showroom), the Wrangler Rubicon is priced at 64.65 lakh (ex-showroom), thanks to all the additional off-road kit. Both come with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The very first Jeep Wrangler, which was codenamed YJ, entered the production line nearly 37 years ago at the American Motors Corporation (AMC) factory. The YJ went on to sell 630,000 units between 1987 and 1995. It was followed by the TJ in 1996, the JK in 2006 and the JL in 2017. Even today, the Wrangler nameplate lives on as one of the most iconic names in the global off-road community.
