JSW MG Motor India has significantly strengthened its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with EVs now constituting 78 per cent of its total sales in February 2025. The company sold 4,002 total units during the month, marking a notable increase in its EV segment, primarily driven by the MG Windsor EV.
The Windsor EV has played a pivotal role in JSW MG's expanding market footprint. Since its debut in October 2024, Windsor sales have grown from 3,116 units to 3,785 units by December, contributing to the company’s record total of 7,516 vehicles sold in that period. The Windsor’s success has helped JSW MG more than double its EV contribution from 35 per cent in August 2024 to its current level.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors has experienced a decline in EV sales for the third consecutive month. In February 2025, Tata reported 5,343 EV units sold, a 23 per cent decrease from the 6,923 units recorded in February 2024. Once the dominant player in India’s EV market with a 64 per cent share in August 2023, Tata has seen its monthly EV sales decline despite a strong portfolio that includes the Nexon EV, Punch EV, and Curvv EV.
Industry experts attribute JSW MG’s rapid growth to its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, which allows customers to lease batteries instead of purchasing them outright. This program, introduced with the Windsor EV in September 2024, has expanded to include the MG Comet EV and MG ZS EV. Under this model, buyers pay a per-kilometre rental fee for battery usage, reducing the upfront cost of EV ownership. For example, the Windsor starts at ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Comet and ZS EV are priced at ₹4.99 lakh and ₹13.99 lakh, respectively. The program has been supported by financial partners such as Bajaj Finance and Hero FinCorp, offering flexible lease plans.
Beyond affordability, the BaaS initiative includes additional incentives such as a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner, one year of free public charging through the MG eHUB app, and a 60 per cent buyback guarantee after three years.
To meet rising demand, JSW MG is upgrading its Halol manufacturing facility to enhance Windsor production and prepare for the launch of new models, including the MG Cyberster and MG M9 under its luxury brand channel, MG Select.
