Kawasaki has refined the Z500 both mechanically and technologically.
Fresh after the debut of the new Ninja 500 in global markets, Kawasaki has now taken the wraps off the 2024 Z500. Just like the fully-faired, sportbike, the Z500 is now comprised of an ABS model and the ABS-equipped SE model. With the latter featuring some additional features and a host of accessories available as standard.
Starting with the heart of the matter, the Kawasaki Z500 is now powered by a bigger 451cc engine. Although the engine is sourced from its predecessor, the increased displacement comes courtesy of a 6.8 mm longer stroke (bore is unchanged). As a result peak torque has increased by 5 Nm (43 Nm), which is also produced at 500 rpm earlier in the rev range (7500 rpm). Kawasaki did not reveal the power figures, but given that it is the Ninja 500’s mill we assume it is the same 51 bhp output produced at 10,000 rpm.
With this increased capacity, Kawasaki has also updated the balancer shaft to cut down on vibration. The connecting rods, crankshaft, and piston have also been modified and a new spacious 5.8-litre airbox to enhance intake efficiency - are some of the key developments made to the powertrain department.
The naked streetfighter is now built around a new steel trellis frame where the engine is a stressed member coupled to a die-cast aluminium swingarm. The lightweight frame has helped shed weight with the Z500 ABS variant weighing 166 kg and the Z500 ABS SE variant weighing 167 kg.
Non-adjustable 41 mm USD telescopic fork at the front and preload adjustable shock at the rear take care of suspension duties. The braking setup has also remained the same with dual-disc brakes with the front wheel and a single-disc rear disc brake setup. However, the front brake master cylinder design has been revised which should aid in better fluid flow and thereby better stopping prowess.
The new 2024 Kawasaki Z500 now looks significantly different than before. This is primarily due to the new triple headlight design wherein the two upper LED headlights are used for low beams, while the lower central headlight is reserved for high beams. Along with that, the front mudguard has been slightly updated and the minimalistic side panels are now further pronounced giving the new Z bike a more muscular stance than before.
In addition to that, Kawasaki engineers claim that the redesigned mirrors will not be as affected by the engine vibrations as on the Z400. Along with that, the seat has also been reshaped to be more comfortable.
The 2024 Kawasaki Z500 gains a new monochrome LCD instrument cluster, while the Z500 ABS SE variant gets a 4.3-inch TFT display instead. There’s no difference in functionality except for that. Both are available with Bluetooth connectivity options which can be accessed via the Kawasaki Rideology app. Moreover, the dash now also displays real-time fuel consumption, which is a new addition.
The Z500 ABS SE variant also gets a USB C outlet neatly tucked close to the dash. Additionally, the Z500 ABS SE gets a sleek-looking belly pan, a dark smoke fly screen, a radiator screen, and a rear seat cowl as optional accessories. Whereas, a tank pad, knee grips, and frame sliders will be available as standard.
Not yet, Kawasaki India started the new year with the launch of the new Ninja ZX-6R followed by the Eliminator. The new Z500 has been launched in global and US markets and the same is expected to land on our shores before the end of this year. When it comes, we expect it to be priced between ₹5.75 - 6 lakh (ex-showroom).
