Kia EV3 to feature a new AI assistant based on ChatGPT, OpenAI's famous chatbot.
Kia has equipped its newly unveiled EV3 all-electric compact SUV with a voice assistant powered by ChatGPT generative AI models, in a bid to enhance the in-vehicle experience.
Kia has revealed that the EV3, set to launch first in its home market in July 2024 before expanding to Europe later this year, will feature a new AI assistant that leverages natural language processing technology from OpenAI's famous chatbot.
While voice assistants are nothing new in modern cars, Kia claims its integration of generative AI will provide a more natural, conversational experience for drivers and passengers. The AI assistant can understand complex contexts and engage in back-and-forth dialogue, assisting with tasks like finding nearby coffee shops, scheduling service appointments, and searching for information or entertainment.
It represents one of the first implementations of ChatGPT-style generative AI directly in a mass-produced vehicle from a major automaker. Mercedes-Benz added a conversational AI assistant to its MBUX infotainment system last year, while BMW and Volkswagen have also previewed similar technologies.
However, Kia's AI assistant is not simply an off-the-shelf solution from OpenAI. The automaker collaborated in developing the system's capabilities specific to the EV3's use case.
Beyond the AI voice controls, the EV3 introduces other tech features like streaming services, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
Whether Kia's approach delivers a truly useful virtual co-pilot or just another confusing voice gimmick remains to be seen when the EV3 arrives in showrooms later this year.
