Is the KTM 160 Duke worth the extra money over the Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0?
The new KTM 160 Duke might come across as quite the enticing option in the sub-200 cc space. But with its asking price set at ₹1.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) it is one of the most expensive options in this space. Especially when you compare it against its direct rival, the Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0. The latter tops out at ₹1.80 lakh and comes packed with all the bells and whistles that one craves for in a modern bike. So, are you getting a better bike for the extra money that you’re shelling out for the KTM? Let’s compare the specs of the two bikes and find that out:
KTM 160 Duke vs Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0: Engine And Transmission
Specification | KTM 160 Duke | Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 |
Engine | 164.2cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder | 155 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder |
Power | 18.74bhp @ 9,500rpm | 18.1bhp @ 10,000rpm |
Torque | 18.1bhp @ 10,000rpm | 14.1Nm @ 7,500rpm |
Transmission | 6-speed with assist & slipper clutch | 6-speed with assist & slipper clutch |
Both naked bikes employ contemporary liquid-cooled single-cylinder powerplants, though they pursue different performance philosophies. The KTM Duke 160 utilises a downsized derivative of the 200 Duke’s engine, delivering a more spirited and rev-happy personality. Conversely, the Yamaha MT-15 incorporates sophisticated Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology, enabling strong power delivery across a broader rpm spectrum and at the same time helps make the mill more frugal. So, while the MT-15 emphasises refined and well-balanced performance, the KTM 160 Duke offers marginally superior peak output figures.
KTM 160 Duke vs Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0: Suspension And Brakes
Specification | KTM 160 Duke | Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 |
Frame | Split-Trellis | Deltabox frame |
Front Suspension | 43 mm WP Apex USD Fork | Upside Down Fork |
Rear Suspension | Monoshock | Link-type Monocross suspension |
Brakes | 320 mm/ 230 mm | 282 mm/220 mm |
Wheels | 17-/17-inch Wheels | 17-/17-inch |
The KTM Duke 160 employs a steel trellis chassis architecture, shared with the Duke 200, and incorporates WP-supplied suspension components, including 43 mm inverted front forks and a preload-adjustable rear monoshock. Braking duties are managed by a 320 mm front disc and 230 mm rear disc, with dual-channel ABS fitted as standard equipment.
The Yamaha MT-15 features a premium Deltabox frame construction, a similar inverted front fork arrangement, and a linked-type rear monoshock system. Its aluminium swingarm construction is a notable hardware advantage.
KTM 160 Duke vs Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0: Dimensions
Specification | KTM 160 Duke | Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 |
Length | NA | 2015 mm |
Width | NA | 800 mm |
Height | NA | 1,070 mm |
Wheelbase | NA | 1,325 mm |
Kerb Weight | 147 kg | 141 kg |
Seat Height | 815 mm | 810 mm |
Ground Clearance | 174 mm | 170 mm |
Fuel Tank | 10.1-litre | 10-litre |
Both bikes are similar in terms of dimensions. However, the Yamaha edges past the KTM with a lighter kerb weight, which should help make it slightly more agile to ride. The KTM 160 Duke, with 4 mm more ground clearance, should be slightly more convenient for our Indian roads.
KTM 160 Duke vs Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0: Features
The KTM 160 Duke provides a comprehensive feature package, incorporating an LCD instrument display, a complete LED lighting arrangement, and dual-channel ABS with an 'off-road' setting. Connectivity options include Bluetooth integration via the KTM Connect application, enabling turn-by-turn navigation, incoming call notifications, and audio system control.
The Yamaha MT-15's latest iteration introduces a contemporary colour TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity on premium variants. Additional features include full LED lighting and a side-stand engine cut-off system.
KTM 160 Duke vs Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0: Pricing And Conclusion
At ₹1.85 lakh, the KTM 160 Duke is the more pricey option than the Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0, as we mentioned at the start. So, to choose from either of the two bikes, it entirely boils down to individual preference. If you want something bratty and aggressive-looking, then the KTM is your poison. However, if you want something calm and yet sporty bike then the Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 will fit your bill.
