The Theory 1 concept car does the 0-100 kmph sprint in under 2.5 seconds.
Lotus unveiled its latest electric concept car which is called the Theory 1. This interestingly named concept sports car has an equally interesting design and performance. It has a radical design and mechanism for the two doors.
The British brand says the Theory 1 will form the base for its upcoming vehicles using three core principles – Digital, Natural and Analogue – which it calls DNA. With these aspects in place, Lotus says it has “simplified and enhanced how a car should feel and perform”. Furthermore, Lotus claims the Theory 1 will fit around the driver and will be able to adapt to the needs.
The Theory 1 has a wedge-shaped design with a massive front diffuser and boomerang-shaped LED DRLs as well as a cab-forward design. The glasshouse, which starts from the forward-set windshield, extends to the rear wing. Speaking of which, the wing has been mounted on the rear motor and suspension assembly. The rear of the Theory 1 looks chunky but the taillamps are slim and wide and flank Lotus lettering in the middle. The Theory 1 gets staggered alloy wheel sizes with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21 inchers at the back.
The doors swivel up and slide back at the same time to give a large opening for the cabin. Lotus says this has allowed it to make the Theory 1’s footprint as little as possible. The doors open to a cabin with a three-seat layout with the driver’s seat in the middle. Lotus says this McLaren F1-like cabin layout allows the driver to have the best possible view of the road ahead. The seats are also integrated into the body structure and the steering wheel and pedals can be adjusted according to the driver. The cabin has a very minimalistic design language and the steering wheel column is mounted on two carbon fibre stalks.
The Theory 1 is an all-electric sports car with 70 kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 402 km. Its dual electric motors produce 986 bhp (combined) and allow it to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in under 2.5 seconds. Lotus’ ethos has always been about making lightweight cars and the Theory 1 weighs under 1600 kg, which is commendable for an EV.
