Neo-Retro style has strong emotional appeal in the electric vehicle market
Following the success of its RM1, a city-focused electric motorcycle, British manufacturer Maeving is electrifying the cafe racer scene with the arrival of the RM1S. This new model caters to riders who crave a blend of classic design and modern electric performance.
Maeving RM1S has a sense of nostalgia with its classic cafe racer elements. Twin shocks, an analogue speedometer, and a luxurious diamond-stitched solo seat take back to a gone era. Yet, it seamlessly integrates modern touches like bright LED lights and responsive disc brakes with linked braking for enhanced safety. This marriage of retro charm and modern functionality creates a motorcycle that's both visually captivating and functionally sound.
Maeving RM1S isn't the only player tapping into the nostalgia goldmine. Its design echoes a growing trend in the electric motorcycle space, particularly evident in Royal Enfield's recently patented electric motorcycle. Both machines weave classic elements – like twin shocks, rounded headlights, and single seats – into modern electric bodies.
This "neo-retro" design philosophy isn't just about aesthetics; it bridges the gap between generations of riders. It attracts veterans of the past era to embrace the future of electric mobility.
Maeving RM1S has a practical design with a focus on everyday use. It has 2 batteries with each weight 15 kg, and a capacity of 2.73 kWh. They contain LG 21700 cells, and offer a respectable range of 129 km on a single charge. The battery compartment is cleverly positioned under the conventional petrol tank. This provides a handy 10 litres of lockable storage space – a win for both aesthetics and practicality. Furthermore, the batteries are removable, allowing for convenient charging at home or work using a standard wall socket. While reaching from 20% to 80% takes under three hours a full charge might take around four hours on each battery pack.
Maeving RM1S isn't just about good looks, it packs a punch too. Its rear hub-mounted electric motor delivers a continuous power output of 7 kW (14 bhp), with a peak of 10.5 kW. This translates to a claimed top speed of 112 kmph.

Beneath the Maeving RM1S's cafe racer charm lies a CrMo steel cradle frame providing a rigid and stable base. It gets a telescopic fork and preload-adjustable twin shocks. Dunlop K70 tyres, wrapped around tube-type spoke wheels with carbon fibre fenders. These offer a blend of classic aesthetics and contemporary performance. Braking is handled by a single-disc brake with a triple-pot calliper up front and a single pot at the rear. The front disc is 300 mm whereas the rear disc is 280mm. There is no ABS on offer but it gets a combi braking system as a safety feature.
The Maeving RM1S has landed in California for $8,995 (approx ₹ 7.5 lakh), with expansion to other states in the USA planned soon. With its blend of classic aesthetics, modern electric performance, and practical features like removable batteries and lockable storage, the RM1S can become a popular offering in the US electric motorcycle market.
