The Maharashtra government has once again extended the deadline for installing high-security registration plates (HSRPs) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Vehicle owners now have until August 15, 2025, to comply with the mandate. The state transport department has warned that strict enforcement will begin from August 16 for non-compliance. This marks the third deadline extension since the initiative was launched in December 2024. Initially, the last date for compliance was set for March 31, 2025, which was first extended to April 30, and then again to June 30.

According to the transport department, Maharashtra has around 2.10 crore vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, that are required to retrofit HSRPs. However, as of June-end, only 23 lakh vehicles have been fitted with the plates, reflecting a compliance rate of barely 11%.

The department, through a public notice, said, “After August 15, enforcement squads will take action against vehicles found without HSRPs. However, vehicles with a valid booking appointment for HSRP installation made on or before August 15 will be exempted from punitive action.”
HSRPs are aimed at enhancing vehicle traceability and curbing vehicle-related crimes. These plates are tamper-proof and come with a unique 10-digit laser-etched code, a non-removable snap lock, and a chromium-based hologram, making them more secure than standard number plates. While new vehicles sold after April 2019 already come with factory-fitted HSRPs, older vehicles were given a phased rollout and extended grace period to comply.
