Mahindra's EV journey gained substantial momentum following the launch of its electric-origin SUVs in March 2025.
Mahindra & Mahindra has achieved a significant breakthrough in India's electric vehicle market, with its EV sales crossing the 20,000-unit milestone over a six-month period from March to August 2025. The homegrown automaker's aggressive push into electric mobility, spearheaded by its born-electric SUVs BE 6 and XEV 9e, has positioned it as a formidable challenger to established EV leaders.
Mahindra's EV journey gained substantial momentum following the launch of its electric-origin SUVs in March 2025. The company's monthly sales data reveals a compelling growth story across five key months:
March 2025: The EV portfolio delivered 3,252 units, marking the commercial debut of the BE 6 with 934 units and XEV 9e with 2,080 units. The legacy XUV400 contributed 238 units to the total.
April 2025: Sales reached 3,328 units, representing a modest 2.3 per cent month-on-month increase. The XEV 9e demonstrated strong performance with 2,441 units, while the BE 6 experienced an initial dip to 550 units as production ramped up.
May 2025: The portfolio achieved its strongest performance with 4,308 units, registering an impressive 29.4 per cent monthly growth. The BE 6 rebounded significantly to 1,206 units, while the XEV 9e peaked at 2,815 units.
June 2025: Sales remained robust at 4,242 units despite a marginal 1.5 per cent decline from May. The BE 6 maintained momentum at 1,203 units, while the XEV 9e recorded 2,808 units.
July 2025: The company posted 4,298 units with a 1.3 per cent month-on-month uptick. The BE 6 achieved its highest monthly sales of 1,546 units, though the XEV 9e moderated to 2,462 units.
August 2025: Retail sales reached 3,495 units, marking the company's strongest year-on-year performance with an explosive 937 per cent growth compared to August 2024.
Mahindra's electric vehicle strategy has fundamentally altered India's EV landscape. The company's market share has witnessed remarkable expansion, jumping from a modest 5 per cent in 2024 to 20 per cent in August 2025. This represents a four-fold increase in market presence, driven primarily by consumer acceptance of its born-electric architecture.
The company's cumulative six-month retail sales from January to June 2025 reached 12,585 units, reflecting a staggering 225 per cent year-on-year growth. This performance enabled Mahindra to capture a 17 per cent market share in India's electric passenger vehicle segment during the first half of 2025, doubling its previous year's performance.
Mahindra's production infrastructure has undergone significant expansion to meet growing demand. The company's Chakan plant produced 19,915 units of the BE 6 and XEV 9e between January and June 2025, with dealer dispatches reaching 19,070 units.
The automaker has enhanced its monthly production capacity from 5,000 operational units out of 7,500 installed capacity in March 2025 to 8,000 units currently. Future expansion plans include scaling to 12,000 units by March 2026, with 8,000 units operational, and further growth to 18,000 units by FY27.
