The upcoming Mahindra Thar ROXX will compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and 5-door Force Gurkha.
Mahindra today confirmed that the 5-door Thar will be launched on August 15. It also revealed the name and the 5-door version of the off-roader will be called the Thar ROXX. It also released a teaser video showing us the SUV’s looks.
The new Mahindra Thar ROXX carries forward the same design ethos of the 3-door Thar, but there are a few changes. For starters, the grille design looks different and has a more premium finish, courtesy of those chrome inserts. The adjacent headlamp style has also been changed and they now begin from the grille itself, instead of the independent floating style found in the 3-door Thar. The rest of the body panels look familiar, except for those new alloy wheel designs – which further add to the premium factor.
The upcoming Thar ROXX is expected to carry forward the same engine options from the 3-door Thar. The latter is available with two diesel engines and one turbo petrol engine option. The former includes the 1.5-litre mill available with a rear-wheel drivetrain and manual gearbox option, and the 2.2-litre mill comes with the choice of both manual and automatic gearbox options, and with a 4X4 option as well. The 2.0-litre turbo petro engine option is available with manual and automatic gearbox options, with RWD capability only. With the addition of a new row that will bring in more weight, we expect Mahindra might tune these engines with higher outputs for better and more efficient performance.
Regarding rows, we expect the Thar ROXX to be a 5-seater, instead of a 7-seater, wherein the third row will be reserved for luggage only. At the front, the dashboard design might be reminiscent of the 3-door Thar, albeit with a few changes here and there. We can also see some new features being introduced, like ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and even a sunroof – the specifics of which will be confirmed on August 15.
Pricing-wise, the Thar ROXX will be priced higher than the 3-door Thar. So, our estimate lies somewhere in the range of ₹16-₹22 lakh. In that price range, it will have the five-door Force Gurkha and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as the company when it comes to competition.
