In a move aimed at addressing growing consumer demand for extended electric vehicle (EV) range, Mahindra has announced plans to introduce a 79 kWh battery pack in the lower variants of its BE 6 and XUV 9e electric SUVs. Since its launch in March 2025, the BE 6 and XUV 9e have collectively recorded sales exceeding 6,300 units. Notably, over 75 per cent of buyers opted for the top-tier “Pack Three” variant—equipped with the 79 kWh battery. The Pack Three offers an ARAI-rated range of 683 km for the BE 6 and 656 km for the XUV 9e. In contrast, the lower trims are currently equipped with a 59 kWh battery, delivering lower ranges of 557 km and 542 km, respectively.
Mahindra’s Executive Director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector, Rajesh Jejurikar, acknowledged this consumer preference for longer-range vehicles, which has prompted the company to reconsider its product strategy. By extending the 79 kWh battery to lower trims, Mahindra aims to broaden its appeal, particularly among cost-conscious buyers who prioritize range over luxury features.
This recalibration could enhance Mahindra’s position in India’s increasingly competitive EV segment, where rivals such as Tata Motors, MG Motor, Hyundai, and Kia are also expanding their electric offerings. While Mahindra’s current top-end variants offer strong range performance, their higher price points may limit accessibility. Offering the same battery capacity in more affordable variants enables the company to retain range competitiveness while lowering the barrier to entry for potential buyers.
