The new XUV 3XO EV is likely to launch around the upcoming festive season.
Mahindra is working on a new electric SUV that is based on the XUV 3XO. Likely to be called the XUV 3XO EV, the subcompact electric SUV will be Mahindra's most affordable EV and will likely replace the XUV 400. The new XUV 3XO EV has been spotted testing in India again, hinting at its imminent launch.
The reason why Mahindra is planning to replace the XUV 400 with the XUV 3XO EV is that it wants to make a clear distinction between the BE 6 and the new smaller EV, and place them in different segments. The current XUV 400 is 4.2 metres in length, the BE 6 is nearly 4.4 metres in length, and the XUV 3XO EV will be less than 4 metres in length.
Another reason will be to achieve economies of scale. Moving to the XUV 3XO platform will allow Mahindra to reduce its costs as it will share a big majority of its sheet metal, plastic parts and components with the internal combustion engined (ICE) XUV 3XO. Currently, the additional 200 mm in length of the XUV 400 means quite a few of the panels and components are different from the XUV 3XO (or XUV 300 on which the XUV 400 is based). The XUV 400 doesn’t sell enough for Mahindra to justify the additional costs. For perspective, Mahindra sold 7,675 units of the XUV400 in the financial year 2025 (FY25) and sold 98,091 units of the XUV 3XO during the same period.
In terms of features, the XUV 3XO EV is likely to carry forward the same feature list as the ICE counterpart. This means the electric SUV will have a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch virtual cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, level 2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, blind-spot cameras and more.
While the powertrain details remain a mystery, the XUV 3XO EV is likely to have the same 34.5 kWh and 39.4 kWh battery packs as the XUV 400. If the power output (148 bhp and 310 Nm) remains unchanged, the smaller and lighter XUV 3XO EV is likely to be much quicker.
The launch timeline of the XUV 3XO EV is still under wraps, but it is likely to make a debut around the upcoming festive season. Once launched, expect it to compete against the likes of the Tata Nexon EV and MG Windsor EV.
