Despite Honda’s best efforts to retain him, the 8-time World Champion seeks Italian pastures
After struggling for the past three years on the RC213V, Marc Marquez has decided to terminate his contract with Repsol Honda for 2024. This news comes on the heels of a stellar ride on Sunday at the Japanese GP, in Honda’s backyard, where he finished on the podium. While it isn’t confirmed as yet, the most likely scenario is that Marc joins his brother at Gresini Ducati for 2024.
Yep, the stars seem to have aligned for the Marquez clan as both brothers are most likely going to be riding a Ducati GP23 next season, the same bike that is highly likely to win this year’s championship at the hands of either Francesco Bagnaia or Jorge Martin. Marquez moving away from Honda is yet another high profile rider leaving the Japanese bikemaker’s ranks, as even Alex Rins, the only rider to win on the RC213V at Austin, America this year, is heading to Yamaha.
While the parallels will be drawn, Marquez’ Honda departure isn’t quite as similar to that of Valentino Rossi. Rossi left Honda when the bike was at the top of its game and sought to challenge the might of HRC with a struggling Yamaha. Marc on the other hand is leaving a damaged Honda outfit and will jump on to a tried, tested and proven championship winning machinery.
Having said that, Marc on a Ducati spells trouble for the entire MotoGP field. He is no doubt the most talented and skilled rider in the field currently. Despite the troubles and absences, he is the only Honda rider to have been competitive on the RC213V. So, imagine what he will be able to do on the GP23.
Is the ninth world title incoming? Will he be able to surpass Rossi’s tally in the years to come? 2024 MotoGP season couldn’t be all the spicier even before the 2023 nail biting season ends.
