Both the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda Special Editions pays homage to the brand’s MC12 racing car.
Maserati is commemorating the 20th anniversary of its return to competitive racing with two new limited edition versions of the MC20 super sports car. The MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda pay tribute to Maserati's iconic and victorious MC12 model from 2004, which marked its comeback to the racing scene after a 37-year absence.
The MC12 inspired the design of the current MC20, which debuted in 2020 as Maserati's first model equipped with the innovative V6 Nettuno engine. These two special series models feature unique liveries and exclusive content drawing inspiration from the historic MC12 Stradale road car and the MC12 GT1 race car campaigned by the Vitaphone Racing team.
Only 20 examples of each the Icona and Leggenda will be produced. The Icona wears a Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale livery reminiscent of the 2004 MC12 Stradale, which itself paid homage to Maserati's Trofeo Light race car from the 24 Hours of Daytona inspired by the 1960s Maserati Birdcage Type 61.
Special details from Maserati's Fuoriserie personalization program are included, such as the Fuoriserie logo, Italian flag graphics, chrome wheels with blue Trident center caps, blue brake calipers, auto-dimming mirrors and a carbon fiber engine cover.
The MC20 Leggenda evokes the colors of the championship-winning MC12 GT1 Vitaphone race car with its Nero Essenza and Digital Mint Matte livery. This MC12 GT1 famously achieved three victories and two runner-up finishes at the 24 Hours of Spa endurance race.
Leggenda-specific Fuoriserie touches include black wheels with mint green center caps, yellow Trident badges and black brake calipers. Both models get lightweight racing bucket seats, embroidered headrests and special engine cover badging denoting their limited build numbers.
As for the Maserati's racing pedigree, from 2004 to 2010, the MC12 GT1 amassed an impressive 27 wins in FIA GT championships, along with three 24 Hours of Spa wins, six team titles for Vitaphone, five drivers' championships including two FIA GT1 world titles, and two constructors' championships for Maserati.
