Mercedes-AMG introduced its latest concept car, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed at the last Monaco Grand Prix. This open, two-seater performance car, devoid of a roof or windscreen, pays homage to motor racing and offers a glimpse of the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz Mythos series. The PureSpeed concept debuted in an exclusive event on a floating pontoon in Monaco's harbour.
The HALO system is a standout feature of the PureSpeed, replacing the traditional A-pillar. This safety component, derived from Formula 1 technology and mandatory in the sport since 2018, is designed to protect the driver’s head in accidents. The HALO system in the PureSpeed is a bracket connected to the car's body, with two specially designed helmets enhancing the field of vision akin to that of Formula 1.
The PureSpeed concept draws design inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, incorporating visible carbon fibre elements in the lower section contrasted with the rounded upper body. The wheels feature unique carbon fibre cladding, with closed rear wheel covers for improved aerodynamics and open front wheel covers for optimal brake cooling and downforce.
The vehicle’s design includes a long bonnet, a low front end with a "shark nose," and a wide lower air intake with AMG branding. Aerodynamic elements, such as the bonnet's air outlet and transparent deflectors, enhance the car's performance by directing airflow over the cockpit.
The concept car also features muscular shoulders over wide rear wheels, merging into an elegant boot lid and a rear apron emphasizing the vehicle's width. Design nods to motorsport history include the flying buttresses behind the seats, reminiscent of the 300 SLR driven by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson in the 1955 Mille Miglia.
PureSpeed's paintwork, transitioning from Le Mans red to graphite grey with a black AMG pattern, references the 1924 Targa Florio race. In that race, a red-painted Mercedes, driven by Christian Werner, won to deter interference from local fans. This historical victory is commemorated by the number 10 on the concept car's front wings.
