Mercedes-Benz E-Class is one of the most sought after luxury sedans in India and the same goes for its SUV counterpart — the GLE. Now, the German marque wants to expand the E-Class lineup with a new model – an estate. Called the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate, this vehicle was recently caught testing on Indian roads.

A fully-camouflaged test unit of the Estate was caught on camera on the roads of Bengaluru, near the Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) facility at Brigade Tech Garden. This suggests that the model is undergoing advanced evaluation and validation on Indian roads.

This isn’t the first time that the E-Class Estate was spotted testing in India. Earlier this year, an uncamouflaged prototype of the same was spied testing. Despite the heavy camouflage, the long-roof silhouette and estate proportions clearly indicate that it is indeed the Estate. Like the previous sighting, the test mule spotted now is the standard E-Class Estate and not the All-Terrain variant. This is supported by the fact that the prototype lacks rugged body cladding, raised ride height and protective skid elements.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate: Design & Interiors

Visual highlights of the recently spied Estate include blacked-out alloy wheels, flush-fit door handles, and a gently sloping roofline. Based on the sixth-gen E-Class LWB that made its India debut in September last year, the E-Class Estate carries forward the same design language but with greater practicality, thanks to a significantly larger boot.

Design elements such as the signature Mercedes’ grille with subtle three-pointed star detailing, sleek LED headlamps, chrome highlights and a clean side profile with frameless windows have been carried over from the E-Class. At the rear, the estate is likely to feature LED tail-lamps with star-shaped lighting elements, a roof-mounted spoiler and a powered tailgate, positioning it as a compelling option for buyers seeking luxury with added practicality.

Although the interiors aren’t visible in the current spy shots, we are positive that the Estate will flaunt the same cabin layout as the E-Class. This is set to include a large central touchscreen with the latest MBUX interface, a fully digital driver display, extensive ambient lighting, premium upholstery, and advanced comfort features such as ventilated and massaging front seats. Safety is also expected to be a key focus, with multiple airbags and a comprehensive ADAS suite included in the package.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate: Will it come to India?

The estate bodystyle hasn’t found many takers in India even though many of them have been tried and tested in the past. Such a vehicle will appeal to those who want flexibility of a larger cargo area with the comfort and elegance of a sedan. The testing around MBRDI indicates that Mercedes may have some plans with the Estate for the Indian market, although there’s no official word from the company yet.
