Users will be able to insert themselves into fantasy situations and edit themselves to look any way they can imagine.

Meta has announced a number of new features and improvements for its Meta AI chatbot, which is already integrated into Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. It is now available in 22 countries total, with Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Cameroon joining India, the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and others. Language support has also been expanded to include Hindi and Hindi (Romanised Script) plus French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portugese. This means that users in India should be able type Hindi words and phrases without changing keyboard layouts. The company says it is continuously working on supporting more languages.

A new generative AI command called “Imagine Edit” will let users supply prompts such as “Imagine a cat on the moon” or “Imagine me as a firefighter”. This function is available now only in English, with user-specific personalisation currently rolling out in beta only in the US, but more languages are being added. As per a WhatsApp blog post, the command in Hindi will be “kalpana karein”. Users will be able to create such images in chats with Meta AI as well as when creating posts.

Meta AI will then produce an image based on these parameters. Users can scan their own faces in 3D to allow the tool to generate images of them. This data can be deleted or reset at any time. Adjustments can be made by telling Meta AI to change, add, or subtract elements, or even animate the results. The results can of course be posted to Meta’s social media apps and shared with other people.

Meta has also published a research paper discussing how the Imagine tool can generate personalised images, including things like changing a person’s facial expressions while preserving their identity and characteristics.

In addition, Meta AI can now handle complex maths and coding prompts, with the adoption of the company’s Lama 405B large-language model which is claimed to have better reasoning capabilities than the existing version. This is a preview version, and users will have to manually switch to it in the Meta AI settings. Users will be able to see step-by-step solutions to maths problems and see explanations of scientific concepts. Code can be written and debugged, with optimisation suggestions. Users can even combine the chatbot’s image and code generation capabilities to develop interactive games or experiences.

Meta says it will be rolling out major feature improvements every two weeks. Next month, Meta Quest VR headset users in the US and Canada will be able to access an experimental Meta AI experience. Users will be able to control their headsets, search the Web for information, get answers to questions, and get real-time news and weather updates using voice commands. Passthrough mode will also let users ask questions based on what they are seeing through the headset’s cameras.
