The MINI Countryman, MINI’s first subcompact crossover SUV, has carved out a niche in the Indian premium-SUV segment since its debut. First launched globally in 2010 and locally assembled in Chennai from June 2013, the Countryman was introduced in India in 2017 with a starting price of ₹34.90 lakh, aiming to double MINI’s volumes and bring new buyers into the brand fold.
MINI India’s sales in calendar year 2017 totalled 421 units, of which the Countryman contributed substantially, representing 5 percent of BMW Group India’s 9,800-unit four-wheeler sales. Early indications suggested strong uptake: Q1 2018 registrations of the Countryman reached 136 units, a 15 percent year-on-year improvement, signalling growing acceptance in urban markets. By 2020, MINI India posted total sales of 512 units, with the locally-produced Countryman commanding over 40 percent of volumes—approximately 205 units—underscoring its status as the brand’s bestseller in India.
In 2021, MINI refreshed the Countryman with updated styling and standard features in the Cooper S and Cooper S JCW Inspired variants, priced from ₹47.75 lakh and assembled at BMW’s Chennai plant. Its sole 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine outputting 189 bhp and 280 Nm, mated to a seven-speed DCT, delivered 0-100 kmph in 7.5 seconds, bolstering its appeal among performance-minded buyers.
The Countryman’s journey in India began with local assembly in 2017, intended to double MINI’s volumes. Initial annual sales of 421 units in 2017 rose modestly in early 2018, followed by a 2020 year-end tally of 512 units, with the Countryman accounting for over 40 percent of sales. Continued product enhancements, local assembly efficiencies, and targeted marketing have sustained annual MINI volumes between 500–700 units, underscoring the Countryman’s role as the cornerstone of MINI India’s line-up.
ALL4 denotes MINI’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system, first introduced on the Countryman to enhance traction and stability. Under normal conditions, power is distributed primarily to the front wheels, with up to 50 percent sent to the rear when required. In extreme conditions, ALL4 can direct 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels for maximum grip. This system broadens the Countryman’s capability, enabling confident handling on wet, slippery, or unpaved surfaces, and complements the John Cooper Works’ performance credentials by ensuring optimal power delivery in all driving scenarios.
With the JCW Countryman ALL4, MINI India now offers a crossover that blends everyday practicality, rugged versatility, and track-inspired performance—reinforcing the Countryman’s enduring appeal in India’s premium-SUV segment.
