Every monsoon, urban India is reminded of its fragile relationship with rain. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Pune, you name the city and there’s havoc always for commuters. As city streets transform into rivers, one dangerous sight remains common cars attempting to wade through waist-deep water. While it might seem like the quickest way home, we want to warn you that such decisions could be life-threatening. Here’s how you can stay safe if caught in a flood with your vehicle.

1. Avoid driving through waterlogged roads

The first rule is also the simplest: do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Even six inches of moving water can cause a car to lose traction. A foot of water is enough to stall most vehicles, and anything above two feet can sweep away even an SUV. If a road ahead looks submerged, turn back and seek an alternate route.

2. Know your car’s limits

Engines are especially vulnerable during floods. If water enters the air intake or exhaust, it can cause hydrostatic lock, permanently damaging the engine. Repairing this could cost lakhs. Remember: no vehicle is “flood-proof.”

3. Stay calm if your car stalls

If your vehicle stops in water, do not repeatedly try to restart it. Instead, switch off the ignition, turn on hazard lights, and exit the car carefully. Staying inside a stalled car in rising water is far more dangerous than abandoning it for higher ground.

4. Avoid underpasses and low-lying areas

These spots are the first to get flooded. Even if the water looks shallow, the depth can be deceptive. Many flood-related casualties happen because drivers underestimate water levels in underpasses.

5. If trapped, act quickly

In rare cases where water rises around you, unbuckle your seat belt immediately, roll down the window (or break it with a headrest if the power fails), and escape. Do not waste time trying to save belongings. Your life comes first.

6. Prepare before the rains

Simple precautions like checking tyre tread, keeping fuel levels high, and carrying an emergency kit (torch, phone charger, first aid) can make a big difference during monsoon emergencies.
