Toll Up 18 percent causing a costlier commute across mumbai’s iconic sea bridge

Mumbai's Bandra Worli Sea Link now has a higher toll, rounding off at ₹100. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) announced an 18 percent increase in toll charges starting April 1, 2024.

One-way trips for cars and jeeps will now cost ₹100, up by ₹15 from ₹85. The increase applies to other vehicles as well. Mini buses, tempos, and light commercial vehicles will pay ₹160, while two-axle trucks and buses will see a jump to ₹210 per trip. The toll increase is likely to impact daily commuters who will now have to shell out a whole round figure of ₹100 for a one way travel within the city.

The revised toll rates will be in effect for three years, until March 31, 2027. To offset the cost increase for frequent travellers, MSRDC is offering a 10% rebate on toll charges and a 20% discount for those purchasing booklets containing 50 or 100 toll coupons in advance. While rebates and discount coupons provide some relief, the overall rise in cost may lead some to explore alternate routes or carpooling.

For those willing to take on traffic congestion, the Mahim Causeway is a free alternative route connecting Worli to Bandra. However, this route is known for heavy traffic, especially during peak hours. The added travel time via Mahim Causeway can vary depending on traffic conditions, but it can easily add 30 minutes to an hour compared to a smooth run via the Bandra Worli Sea Link.
